SEO is a Four-Letter Word
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the practise of setting up a website to optimize its architecture, page structure and content to improve indexing and ranking within search engines.
If you understand that having your website at or near the top of page one of a search result, especially one that indicates a buying intent (e.g. "where to buy sneakers"), then you probably realize that ranking is important to achieve this. And ranking is mostly dependant on the amount of authority your web pages each have versus others on the web covering the same topic.
Part of this will come from optimizing the website structure and content, but the majority will most likely come from links to the page. This raises the question about the method for getting inbound links from other sites.
From Google's Webmaster Guidelines: "Illicit techniques that manipulate search engines to try to rank a site higher are considered blackhat techniques that violate our Webmaster Guidelines." That includes many of the linking schemes and techniques such as guest blogging, and those can and will get your website penalized or delisted from the Google Search Index.
What to do with this dilemma? Here's what we do:
1) On-site/on-page SEO (good content, well-structured website and pages)
2) Content Marketing (see Content River). Links occur naturally as a result of this system.
