About
I’ve built the systems. Now I help you choose them.
Aqua Media is an independent advisory practice run by Dave Bezuidenhout. After two decades in digital, both running my own shop and subcontracting inside other agencies, I’ve narrowed Aqua Media to one thing: independent strategic advice for organizations that take their technology seriously.
Why the focus
I narrowed it for a reason.
The pattern in strategic work was always the same, whether I was watching from inside someone else’s agency or running the engagement myself. The “audit” arrived as a 300-page PDF nobody read, full of generic findings and a recommendation to buy whatever happened to be on the reseller agreement. The “strategy” was a deck that died the moment it met an engineering team. Senior people pitched the work; juniors delivered it. Independent recommendations got quietly bent by partner incentives.
So I narrowed it. One advisor, one kind of work: strategic advisory, audits, decision support. No reseller margin, no junior team, no vendor incentives bending the recommendation. Small deliverables, frequently.
Honest pricing.
If you call, I pick up.
Principles
Five things I believe, and one thing I refuse to do.
Twenty years of these conversations
Most strategy questions I get are variations of problems I’ve seen before. The real work is recognizing the pattern, understanding what’s different in this situation, and sharing lessons that experienced operators usually learn through trial and error. It’s not magic — it’s experience and judgment.
Vendor-neutral, always
No partner tiers, no reseller margin, no sponsored advice. If your invoice doesn’t pay for it, you shouldn’t be hearing about it.
Senior people on the work
You hire me, you get me. No pyramid, no handoff to a team you didn’t meet, no associate billing out against your retainer. When the work needs a specialist I’m not, I bring in someone vetted who you contract directly.
Decisions, not deliverables
You don’t need more 30-page info-dumps, you need to know what’s wrong, and what your options are for moving forward. Clear insights, workable recommendations.
Boring infrastructure, on purpose
Measurement, analytics, and the technical layer underneath should be reliable and quiet. I’m fine being unfashionable about it.
I won’t tell you what you want to hear.
If I think the engagement is a bad idea, or the tool you already have is actually fine, I’ll say so. I lose pitches because of this. Worth it.
Who’s behind it
An advisor and a small network.
You work with me directly on every engagement, from the discovery call through the final readout. When the work calls for specialist hands — design, copy, an accessibility audit, a security review — I bring in collaborators from a small network of vetted independents I’ve worked with before.
